How to add an external speaker to your katana 100 into an external speaker (works on any combo amp)

378 ratings | 7884 views
This mod is pretty simple and costs far less than buying the new katana Artist. Increase the flexibility of your katana or indeed ANY combo guitar amplifier. Katana Artist: https://www.thomann.de/intl/boss_katana_artist.htm?offid=1&affid=288 Katana 100: https://www.thomann.de/intl/boss_katana_100.htm?offid=1&affid=288 Katana 50: https://www.thomann.de/intl/boss_katana_50.htm?offid=1&affid=288 Palmer CAB 112 GBK https://www.thomann.de/intl/palmer_pcab112gbk.htm ?offid=1&affid=288 The best thing about doing this mod is that is does NOT invalidate your warranty and can be easily reveresed without leaving any trace of modding. You can then plug your Katana combo into any (8 ohm for the 100) external speaker. This also works for the 50 watt katana - 4 ohms and the 100 212 - (8 ohms for one speaker or 2 16 ohm speakers) T-shirt link - https://teespring.com/stores/theguitargeek Find me on social media here: Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheGuitarGeek Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/theguitargeekyt Twitter - https://twitter.com/guitargeekYT

Any idea if the Katana 100 combo power amp would play nicely with a 16 ohm external cabinet? The HEAD can be used with a 16 ohm cab - Would this be the same?
TheGuitarGeek (6 days ago)
Hi. The 112 powers 8 ohm at 100w https://www.boss.info/us/support/knowledge_base/115001797863/
Danny Stewart (11 days ago)
Great idea, thanks. One question; I'll be plugging into an old Marshall 212 cab with original greenbacks. The greenbacks are rated 30w each. Does that mean I can only use the 50w setting on the Katana, not the 100w. ? Thanks again.
Danny Stewart (10 days ago)
Thanks again.
TheGuitarGeek (10 days ago)
I would play it safe and keep it on 50.
petkopeet (11 days ago)
So can i plug 100w 1x12 combo into 4x16ohm 12" speaker cab, or will I damage the amp?
Flat Plane Dynamite (24 days ago)
Another good one... nice job!!, I saw a nother option where they drilled a hole in the back plate and added a female 1/4 jack, you can have 2 options one were it shuts off the internal speaker and you can use a cab of your choice, the other is to have another katana speaker cab along with the combos speaker. ..I believe the Katana speaker are xcellent speakers.I have the 100 watt head and with my Marshall cab it sound awesome and really loud..the way the katana takes O.D. pedals sounds tube like, of all the digital amps, Boss is the only one that let's you decide what tone you want to hear..it does that very well...I believe that 2 100 watt 2x 12 combos would sound amazing in stereo....
tcanter64 (25 days ago)
So you can’t use the cab and the amp speaker together?
TheGuitarGeek (25 days ago)
Not with this method. I would not recommend it either
Grim177 (26 days ago)
Does anybody sell pre-made versions of anything like this? I know it's a very simple mod but I think it would sell like the proverbial hotcake.
Grim177 (26 days ago)
This would work with any combo that doesn't have a speaker out though, correct? i'd love to have something similar for my Marshall Lead 12 but I'm not confident enough in my soldering skills to have a go myself.
TheGuitarGeek (26 days ago)
I don't think so. It's certainly not endorsed by boss
timothy jones (1 month ago)
Why not just plug a cabinet or amp into your line out jack?
Henio (1 month ago)
timothy jones line out is for recording or plugging in to a mixer then to a fullrange speakers
TheGuitarGeek (1 month ago)
Because that wouldn't work...
owain bestley (1 month ago)
This is a pretty good mod, nice one
TheGuitarGeek (1 month ago)
Cheers Owain
Bleron Mehmeti (1 month ago)
does adding a 100 watt cab get you e tra volume?
Gabriel Taylor (2 months ago)
If you use the completely covered insulated spade connectors you wouldn't need to use heat shrink or tape and would be reversible and more user friendly.
TheGuitarGeek (1 month ago)
I agree but they are not as secure as this method
psour33 (2 months ago)
Thank's a lot :) Too bad ! Already sold my Katana and bought the K. Artist :p But I do not regret it. Nice mod ! Thank's again
TheGuitarGeek (1 month ago)
You are welcome!
William Smothers (2 months ago)
I have the head/212 cabinet, because I wanted the speaker out and because I liked the sound of the 212 much better than the 100 combo. However, I have not had a chance to hear the Artist. I wonder how the 100H/212 stacks up against the Artist, tone wise? They are about the same cost.
TheGuitarGeek (1 month ago)
i would still say the artist is "better" but i have not heard them side by side
Giaffir arturo (2 months ago)
Wait a second! Why do I need to connect an external speaker if I can amplify it through a microphone to two much bigger speakers in stereo... Can you give me and answer?
TheGuitarGeek (2 months ago)
You don't need to... you can mic it but it's a mono amp
Randy Vertrees (2 months ago)
Please do a vid with a 4x12 test and a 2x12 test...to see how good that Katana 100 sounds!💯
TheGuitarGeek (2 months ago)
I'll do something for sure. Good idea
Peter Schmidt (2 months ago)
It's definitely one thing the Katana's lack is an external speaker jack. Instead of the insulation tape, use insulated connectors. And you could add another 1/4" jack and use the switch on it to cut the internal speaker.
Richard Tremblay (3 months ago)
Just did the mod. I'm running it into a Traynor 2x12 slant cab loaded with selection v30's. It sounds absolutely killer. Thanks for the awesome mod
TheGuitarGeek (3 months ago)
Cool! That must sound killer
Bloodpact Guild (3 months ago)
How about showing us how to add an effects loop to the 50. Because the 50 is at the limit of what I'd pay for any Katana but is the only one with that dealbreaker, hah
TheGuitarGeek (3 months ago)
That's a good amp
Bloodpact Guild (3 months ago)
I was only joking, taking a stab at Boss' transparent ploy of getting people to step up. I'm happy with my amps, heck my $120 Joyo Meteor has everything I need. (Apart from a speaker, but that's a bonus!)
TheGuitarGeek (3 months ago)
I don't think the work or expense would be worth it. You're better off getting the 100
Jose Manuel Esteban (4 months ago)
Awsome work, dude! Gonna try this on my Laney Cub12, guess it will be similar (I've got a Katana head and a Palmer cabinet loaded with an Eminence Texas Heat)
TheGuitarGeek (4 months ago)
Hey! You're welcome man. Enjoy
Tone Seeker (4 months ago)
Very clever! I just discovered your channel 15 minutes ago and subscribed immediately. You are brilliant. I own a bunch of digital amps, including both the 100 and the Artist Katanas, and 2 tube amps, ..a DSL 40C and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. You've given me great idea already. Looking forward to seeing more.
TheGuitarGeek (4 months ago)
Cool! Thanks and welcome to my channel. That's a great selection of amps
John Spina (5 months ago)

The larger terminal on the Boss Katana's speaker actually takes a 5.2mm female spade connector, available from V&U Electronics online in the UK. This particular size is way more difficult to get hold of than the larger 6.3mm type in the UK. Celestion and Eminence use the 5.2mm size too. 6.3mm spades are a little too loose fitting and may short out if detached by vibration.
TheGuitarGeek (5 months ago)
Thanks for the info. I've had no issue using the 6.3mm though. It's very tight
Xawen Bastarach (6 months ago)
Personally, I prefer with a switch socket, but I admit your's is simpler to do.
TheGuitarGeek (6 months ago)
Thank-you
Emiliano Buttarelli (6 months ago)
Great! Some day I'll do it for my 112. I already thought an ext cab could be connected via the blade connectors but I didn't think about build a speaker out box! BTW which impedance should have the ext cab?
TheGuitarGeek (6 months ago)
Welcome
Emiliano Buttarelli (6 months ago)
tnx mate!
TheGuitarGeek (6 months ago)
Cool! Katana 50 is 4 ohms. Katana 100 is 8 ohms
JohnnyG (6 months ago)
Wow, that Palomar cab sounds awful. Thanks for the vid!
TheGuitarGeek (6 months ago)
You're welcome
Eric Valverde (6 months ago)
i want to hook it up to a 1x12 cab to make it a 2x12 amp...maybe changing the Katana's speaker for another one that's not based on the Greenback...is good for very old school metal...but i need more low end and roar
MONKEYZENTV (6 months ago)
That's a great mod man. I'm just ordering the parts I haven't got yet. What gauge are you using for the wire please?
TheGuitarGeek (4 months ago)
I don't think it works that way but the wire i used was about the same used by boss
schnaps54 (4 months ago)
Because with 4mm you lose the definition in medium and treble and bass are too accentuated, right?
TheGuitarGeek (6 months ago)
Thanks! I'm using 4mm here I think but since then I have built more using 2.5mm. I got much better results with 2.5mm speaker cable.
Tim's Whitten (6 months ago)
I dont see many modding the 212/100 combo...They have 2x16 ohm speakers so to plug a cabinet AND use the internal speakers gets complicated due to ohms and wattage and whether to connect in series or parallel to one or both internal speakers?? My head starts to hurt...
TheGuitarGeek (6 months ago)
My mod works on the 212 also. It's the same principle as the amp still expects 8ohms
justin cornelius (6 months ago)
Thanks man.. U answered my question..now getting myself an orange cab
TheGuitarGeek (6 months ago)
You're welcome. Orange cabs are awesome
oscar rosales (6 months ago)
Hi there!....I am thinking to do that job to my Marshall MG30CFX. Should I be carefully with the impedance or can I use any 4-8 or 16 Ohms speakers?
reezalguy (7 months ago)
Thank you !
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Go for it!
reezalguy (7 months ago)
thinking of converting my old Fender Mustang I v1.0 amp to a portable head after seeing this.
Volker Wohlfahrt (7 months ago)
Will certainly do that one at a point!
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
If you need help ,just ask
Greg Rodgerson (7 months ago)
Hey, GG could you tell me what amp stand your using with the Artist?
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
You're welcome Greg
Greg Rodgerson (7 months ago)
Awesome! Thx, man.
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Sure. It's the millenium stand from Thomann.
Tom Corr (7 months ago)
Brilliant Andy. Especially as I have a 3 year warranty on my Katana. Could you tell me Where can you get the Palmer cab please and what Ohm rating should the speakers be ? 👍😊
TheGuitarGeek (5 months ago)
Yes and yes. Please email me.
RidiculousWonk (5 months ago)
TheGuitarGeek those mod kits ready yet and will you ship to the USA?
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
They're available now. Just need to work out pricing.
Tom Corr (7 months ago)
Great idea ! Let me know when they’re available 😊
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
I got the cab from Thomann and the rating should be 8 ohms. I'm actually building a few mod kits to order.
marcavus1 (7 months ago)
Great video. I am not so sure that the Katana Artist speaker sounds that much different that the one in the 100. That said that greenback sounds awsome!
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Let's find out in a few days...
Miguel Casanova (7 months ago)
Noooooo... I'll give you anything you want to have some nice spoilers!!! Honest, unbiased spoilers! :) Waiting for my Katana Artist to arrive next week... I want to know what I am getting! Never could wait for the end of a series!!!! :) I am sure the head (or the 100) is the exact same amp, with only a changed speaker!!! My bet is on that... :)
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Just for that I'll move the video up to Wednesday
Miguel Casanova (7 months ago)
TheGuitarGeek love and appreciation!!!! 😀
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
What's it worth?
Ces McMyth (7 months ago)
I want to do the opposite. To plugg a head amp into the katana. Like to try the mini joyo heads on the katana... clueless about how to go around it
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Yeah really! Let me know how you get on
Ces McMyth (7 months ago)
TheGuitarGeek really? Awesome. Going to try it! Cheers budd
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Just do the half of my mod where I added a jack plug to the speaker cable that's connected to the speaker and connect that Jack to your joyo head
J Steen (7 months ago)
Nice mod, the regular katana speaker sounded awsome to me already.
Michael Gorman (3 months ago)
It would have been easy to supply an extension speaker jack, strange really.
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
To me too. Just nice to have options
Mal Reynolds (7 months ago)
I bought the HEAD. So...... yeah. I'm all set. ;-)
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Lucky you!
danclepper89 (7 months ago)
So how would you make it to where the internal speaker and a 1x12 cab work together? Great video looking forward to trying this😀
marcavus1 (7 months ago)
A good tech could wire up a jack the would add a second speaker in series (8+8= 16 ohms) when you plug it in and run the stock speaker when you unplug the external cab. Do a google search. If you know a good amp tech I would recommend having it done. If the guy scratches his head when you ask him, find another tech.
marcavus1 (7 months ago)
That is a little risky. You need to watch impedance. If you don't know how to calculate it consult a local shop and have it done. Not something I would mess with.
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
For that you just add two cables to the speaker but it's not recommended to run two speakers unless you keep the impedance at 8 ohms
mbplove (7 months ago)
Great mod.
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Thanks
Barb Melle (7 months ago)
From Leo: Nice easy mod. I have never thought about making it reversable. I had always drilled and screwed permanent installation. The tape to prevent shorting is a must, not just for cutting out, but many solid state circuits are not tolerant of short circuit on the outputs. Also, some circuits cannot tolerate an open circuit condition (as in no speaker at all) I have not seen a print on the Katana, but it is a safe practice to always have the proper value speaker properly connected any time the amplifier is powered. Good Job!
William Smothers (2 months ago)
there are also covered spade lugs that do a good job of isolating the connections.
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Cheers Leo. All correct there
great job!
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Thanks Tony
Matt Allen (7 months ago)
Nice job ... Best excuse to buy an external cab I can think of. Have to wonder if you ever came across a Waza Cab to go with it on the cheap. Mind you at that price point you may as well buy the artist!
William Smothers (2 months ago)
I have the 212 cabinet and have thought about getting the Waza drivers from Boss, if possible. Again, it may be cost prohibitive.
Matt Allen (7 months ago)
I think the chances of one falling off the back of a legitimate lorry and onto my lap (ouch) is quite thin. I wonder if I can return my 100 and upgrade to an artist.
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
A used Waza cab would be interesting.... I think you're right about the price though.
Lando27Music (7 months ago)
Also ordered a t-shirt! I’ll feature it in future videos. :)
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
hey Lando. Thank you so much for your support!
Lando27Music (7 months ago)
These Katana mod videos are awesome. I don’t have my 100 anymore but would have definitely tried this! Take care!
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Thanks man. You could do it on your Peavey or does that already have a speaker out?
MrMaserrati (7 months ago)
Genius!
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Thanks
Glen White (7 months ago)
Nice work
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Thank you Glen
Miguel Casanova (7 months ago)
Amazing video... only something missing to be ultra mega amazing!!! Running your new Katana 100 "head" through the cabinet of the Artist you reviewed recently!!! That is the ultimate video to show us exactly what has been changed in the Artist (which, I am sure, was only the speaker and cabinet... for 300 euros... maybe a bit exaggerated!). Keep up the good work... and please... make us a video comparing the Katana 100, the Artist and the Katana "head" through the Artist's cabinet!!! I will literally pay for a video comparing that!!!! Promise! :) You rock!
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Me too. I'm very curious
Miguel Casanova (7 months ago)
TheGuitarGeek can't wait!!!!
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
It's being filmed tomorrow!

Thanks Andy, great video which I’m guessing can apply to other amps too, maybe.
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Pretty much any amp, yes
alein81902 (7 months ago)
Great video!
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Thank you
Nino Rafanelli (7 months ago)
Great video! I wanted to connect my Katana to my Marshall 4x12 and this will help. Question, will the Katana drive a 16ohm 4x12? I know the internal speaker is 8ohm, but is the Katana rated for 8ohm minimum or maximum? Thanks!
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Hi. Thanks. The katana 100 will power 16 ohms but not 4 ohms
Seb LP (7 months ago)
Great video! How would I do this on the 212 katana given that it has a lot more cables?
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
I suspect you would just go in to the box from the amp and then from the box into the first speaker. I'll need to check it though
Glenn Smith (7 months ago)
Another Gem! Nice Andy
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Cheers Glenn. I really appreciate it
Stevie G (7 months ago)
Great, simple idea Andrew, but I quite like the existing speaker in my Katana, and I don't have much room for an additional speaker cab!
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Enjoy it man
Stevie G (7 months ago)
TheGuitarGeek That's why I've just bought a Marshall Code!
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
I like the speaker in mine too but it's nice to have another flavour in the tone arsenal!
TheGuitarGeek (7 months ago)
Like if you've done the mod or are thinking about doing the mod!
TheGuitarGeek (3 months ago)
Thanks. Just match or exceed the gauge that's in there
Richard Tremblay (3 months ago)
Great mod. Can you tell me what gauge of wire you used. Thanks a ton.
TheGuitarGeek (4 months ago)
Thanks. I'm impressed how it sounds
Trampas Newberry (4 months ago)
Great idea. Kudos to you! I’ve been thinking of doing this myself.
