Oven Won't Heat: Troubleshooting Gas Range Problems

03:00
This video from Sears PartsDirect shows you what to do if your gas oven won’t heat. Several things could cause your oven to stay cool. You could have a problem with your gas supply, or you might have a bad igniter. But you could also have a problem with the electronic control board or the safety gas valve. This video shows you how to use a multimeter to check for continuity between these parts and locate which component is causing the problem. Visit us at https://www.searspartsdirect.com?sid=soc:youtube:oven-wont-heat-troubleshooting-gas-range-problems Or call 1-800-437-1673 to speak with a parts specialist. The video includes these parts and tools. Look up your model to make sure you get the right parts for your range. Multimeter https://www.searspartsdirect.com/part-number/82141/0034/034.html?sid=soc:youtube:multimeter Igniter https://www.searspartsdirect.com/part-number/316489406/0022/628.html?sid=soc:youtube:direct-part-link Electronic Control Board https://www.searspartsdirect.com/part-number/316630005/0022/628.html?sid=soc:youtube:direct-part-link Find parts for your range at: https://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/product-types/Range-Parts?sid=soc:youtube:range-parts Or click here to schedule an appointment with a repair technician. https://www.searshomeservices.com/repair#showall Transcript: Hi, this is Wayne from Sears PartsDirect. Today, we're going to talk about troubleshooting an oven on a gas range that won’t heat. First thing you’ll want to do is confirm that you don’t have a problem with your gas supply. If your surface burners are working, then you know your oven should be getting gas as well. If the burner isn't working, check your gas supply cut-off valve to make sure that it's open. If it is open and you’re not getting gas, then your gonna need to contact your gas supplier to figure out what’s wrong. Some ranges have a service cut-off valve on the pressure regulator that shuts off the gas supply to the oven and not the surface burners. If your range has one, make sure that the service valve is open. The next thing we’ll check is the oven burner igniter. Pull the bottom panel out of your cold oven. Start the oven and see if the igniter glows. If the igniter glows you may be convinced that it’s working and want to replace the safety gas valve instead. But the safety gas valve rarely fails. The igniter can glow but not get hot enough to open the safety gas valve. In fact, this IS the most frequent failure when an oven burner won't ignite even though the igniter is glowing bright. Replacing the igniter in this situation usually fixes the problem. If you're uncertain whether your glowing igniter has failed, you can have a trained service technician check the amp draw through the igniter circuit. Now, what do you do if your igniter wasn’t glowing? For these checks, we’ll need to check resistance using a multi-meter. If you don't have one, you can find one at searspartsdirect.com. Unplug the range. For safety, always disconnect power before checking resistance. To check the resistance of the igniter, put the meter leads on the igniter terminals. If you measure between 10 and 2500 ohms then you know the igniter is okay. If the igniter measures no continuity, that’s an “OL” on this meter, then you need to replace the igniter. Here’s a video showing you how. Next, check resistance on the safety gas valve. The safety gas valve should measure less than 5 ohms of resistance. If the safety gas valve measures no continuity, you can have a service technician replace that part. If the igniter and the safety gas valve both check okay then you could have a problem with wiring, or a defective electronic control board. Pull of the back panel and check resistance through the ignition circuit at the electronic control board. If you measure resistance through the ignition circuit then replace the electronic control board. Here’s a video showing you how. If you measure OL through the ignition circuit wiring, then you'll need to trace the wires through the ignition circuit and repair the broken wire. Click here to learn more about repairing wires. Warning: The LP conversion kit must be installed by a qualified installer, familiar with all precautions required and comply with state and local requirements. Failure to follow instructions may result in fire, explosion or production of carbon monoxide causing property damage, personal injury or loss of life. The qualified installer is responsible for the correct installation of the LP conversion kit. Don't attempt this conversion unless you're qualified to complete it safely. Wear work gloves to protect your hands. Now, let’s get started. Shut off the house circuit breaker for the range. Turn the gas shut-off valve to the off position. Remove all the cooktop grates. Lift the burner caps off the burner heads. Using a 3/16-in socket, remove the nuts that secure the gas burner heads in place. Remove the burner heads. Using a 7-mm nut driver, remove the orifices from the burner orifice holders. Determine which LP orifices go to the range burners. The LP conversion kit instructions provide the LP orifice BTU ratings. Refer to your owner’s manual to see the BTU ratings of the range burners and match the LP orifices to the burners based on their BTU ratings. Screw the LP orifices firmly onto the burner orifice holders. Position the burner heads in the correct locations. Reinstall the burner head screws and tighten them firmly. Cover the burner heads with the correct burner caps. Reinstall the grates on the cooktop. Open the warmer drawer fully. Pull up on the left release lever and pull the warmer drawer out slightly. Push down on the right release lever and pull the warmer drawer out of the range. Using a wrench, unscrew and remove the hex nut cap on the pressure regulator. Remove the plastic conversion plug. Flip the conversion plug over and reinsert it into the pressure regulator. Reinstall the hex nut cap. Tighten the broil burner orifice spud 1- 1/2 turns to bottom out snug against the burner tube. Do not overtighten. Loosen the air shutter lock screw and open the air shutter fully. Tighten the air shutter lock screw. Tighten the bake burner orifice spud 1- 1/2 turns to bottom out snug against the burner valve. Do not overtighten. Loosen the air shutter lock screw and open the air shutter fully. Tighten the air shutter lock screw. Position the warmer drawer on the rails. Push the warmer drawer shut. Switch on the electrical circuit breakers and open the gas supply valve. Check the operation of the burners. If the oven flame is lifting away from the burner, reduce the air shutter opening. Test the oven burners and adjust the air shutters to achieve the proper flames.

The Fatal F7 Error on a GE Oven

01:29
The F7 error will come on while baking and sometimes completely unprompted. Often, after pressing stop and canceling the beeping that comes with the error, the bake and broil buttons stop working. Turning the oven off and then back on does not fix the problem. It's intermittent, but when it starts, it generally continues for a while and I have to leave the oven powered off. The manual says that an F7 error is related to the keypad.
