How to practice emotional first aid | Guy Winch

17:29
We'll go to the doctor when we feel flu-ish or a nagging pain. So why don’t we see a health professional when we feel emotional pain: guilt, loss, loneliness? Too many of us deal with common psychological-health issues on our own, says Guy Winch. But we don’t have to. He makes a compelling case to practice emotional hygiene — taking care of our emotions, our minds, with the same diligence we take care of our bodies. How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime | Nadine Burke Harris

Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Pediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain. This unfolds across a lifetime, to the point where those who’ve experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer. An impassioned plea for pediatric medicine to confront the prevention and treatment of trauma, head-on. What if 3D printing was 100x faster? | Joseph DeSimone

10:47
What we think of as 3D printing, says Joseph DeSimone, is really just 2D printing over and over ... slowly. Onstage at TED2015, he unveils a bold new technique — inspired, yes, by Terminator 2 — that's 25 to 100 times faster, and creates smooth, strong parts. Could it finally help to fulfill the tremendous promise of 3D printing? What happens when our computers get smarter than we are? | Nick Bostrom

16:32
Artificial intelligence is getting smarter by leaps and bounds — within this century, research suggests, a computer AI could be as "smart" as a human being. And then, says Nick Bostrom, it will overtake us: "Machine intelligence is the last invention that humanity will ever need to make." A philosopher and technologist, Bostrom asks us to think hard about the world we're building right now, driven by thinking machines. Will our smart machines help to preserve humanity and our values — or will they have values of their own? How does a robin know to fly south? The answer might be weirder than you think: Quantum physics may be involved. Jim Al-Khalili rounds up the extremely new, extremely strange world of quantum biology, where something Einstein once called “spooky action at a distance” helps birds navigate, and quantum effects might explain the origin of life itself. How CRISPR lets us edit our DNA | Jennifer Doudna

How to stay calm when you know you'll be stressed | Daniel Levitin

12:21
You're not at your best when you're stressed. In fact, your brain has evolved over millennia to release cortisol in stressful situations, inhibiting rational, logical thinking but potentially helping you survive, say, being attacked by a lion. Neuroscientist Daniel Levitin thinks there's a way to avoid making critical mistakes in stressful situations, when your thinking becomes clouded — the pre-mortem. "We all are going to fail now and then," he says. "The idea is to think ahead to what those failures might be." Fun With Powdered Alcohol: You Can Stop Being Scared Now

07:06
People are freaking out about powdered alcohol, but I wasn’t convinced they understood the science behind it. So I tested their concerns. Will it get you crazy drunk? Will people snort it? Watch and see! -Brent My WIRED article: http://wrd.cm/1PUup9X | SUBSCRIBE for more videos: http://wrd.cm/15fP7B7 Notes: Let’s state the obvious here: this is not the commercial version of powdered alcohol. It’s a very DIY version that was suggested by Popular Science (see link below). The version that is slated to go on sale this summer will almost certainly use a higher proof alcohol (151 is as high as we could legally get in California), so it’ll be a bit more efficient. There’s also a strong chance that it will use a cyclodextrin powder instead of the maltodextrin we used. Cyclodextrin is essentially a ring of sugar molecules that can trip liquids inside. Right now food-grade cyclodextrin is very difficult to find for consumers and it’s quite expensive, so we went with maltodextrin. We acknowledge that there’s a chance that cyclodextrin would dissolve a bit faster, but we maintain that it would still be prohibitively slow for spiking a drink. Everything else basically holds true. For the snorting section, for instance, that is the real quantity you would need to get one drink’s worth. How we teach computers to understand pictures | Fei Fei Li

18:03
When a very young child looks at a picture, she can identify simple elements: "cat," "book," "chair." Now, computers are getting smart enough to do that too. What's next? In a thrilling talk, computer vision expert Fei-Fei Li describes the state of the art — including the database of 15 million photos her team built to "teach" a computer to understand pictures — and the key insights yet to come. Rob Knight: How our microbes make us who we are

17:29
Rob Knight is a pioneer in studying human microbes, the community of tiny single-cell organisms living inside our bodies that have a huge — and largely unexplored — role in our health. “The three pounds of microbes that you carry around with you might be more important than every single gene you carry around in your genome,” he says. Find out why. Can we create new senses for humans? | David Eagleman

20:39
As humans, we can perceive less than a ten-trillionth of all light waves. “Our experience of reality,” says neuroscientist David Eagleman, “is constrained by our biology.” He wants to change that. His research into our brain processes has led him to create new interfaces to take in previously unseen information about the world around us. The Math Behind Basketball's Wildest Moves | Rajiv Maheswaran | TED Talks

Basketball is a fast-moving game of improvisation, contact and, ahem, spatio-temporal pattern recognition. Rajiv Maheswaran and his colleagues are analyzing the movements behind the key plays of the game, to help coaches and players combine intuition with new data. Bonus: What they're learning could help us understand how humans move everywhere. Brian - @weezmgk Tom - @SydneyTom_ Bib Bishop - Actually turned the gears down in his shop. Couldn't have done it without Bob! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GET SMARTER SECTION: A quick clarification.... It took me 8 months to learn how to do this, but I was only picking up the bike and running to the end of the driveway and back every day. I wasn't "ACTIVELY" trying to learn. Meaning... I wasn't struggling and trying to make my brain learn. I simply got on the bike every day, tried to operate it to the end of the driveway, turned around and tried to operate it back. The goal was to understand how my brain figured things out on its own, without trying to force it to. Many people have built bikes like this and figured it out in much less than 1 day by staying on the bike until they were able to master it. I had no timelines, and was using this as an exploratory activity to learn how I learn. Do not misinterpret this to mean that I struggled and tried very hard every day for 8 months. That's simply not true. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tweet ideas to me https://twitter.com/smartereveryday I'm also on Instagram, Facebook, and Reddit http://instagram.com/smartereveryday https://www.facebook.com/SmarterEveryDay http://www.reddit.com/r/smartereveryday If you like what I do and want to support my efforts to create Smart kids and Smarter Every Day here are a couple of links you can use to help. The first 21 days of a bee’s life | Anand Varma

06:07
We’ve heard that bees are disappearing. But what is making bee colonies so vulnerable? Photographer Anand Varma raised bees in his backyard — in front of a camera — to get an up close view. This project, for National Geographic, gives a lyrical glimpse into a bee hive — and reveals one of the biggest threats to its health, a mite that preys on baby bees in the first 21 days of life. With his incredible footage, set to music from Magik*Magik Orchestra, Varma shows the problem ... and what’s being done to solve it. (This talk was part of a session at TED2015 guest-curated by Pop-Up Magazine: popupmagazine.com or @popupmag on Twitter.)
